Being the Church in Quincy

It has taken me two full days to finally take it all in. And honestly, I'm not completely confident that it's possible to fully comprehend what God did this past Sunday night. To even imagine that we could host an event like Rock the Block for our city is indescribable. This was not an alternative event on church property for church kids. This was a community-wide, city of Quincy endorsed event that captured anyone and everyone, especially the unchurched and lost. This is EXACTLY what a church event should be!

The sights and sounds from Sunday's Rock the Block will echo in my memory for a long time, and it's days like Sunday that become the catalyst for an incredible move of God in our lives and in the lives of people in our community. I am completely overwhelmed with what God accomplished through us, and my heart is spilling over with joy for the people I was able to serve with. Here's a simple snapshot with what has raced through my mind over the last 48 hours....

1. Did you see HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE EXPOSED TO THE GOSPEL SUNDAY NIGHT??!?!?!? Most of those I have spoken with have estimated between 3500-4000 people participated in Rock the Block, and I am convinced that everyone of them heard the Gospel from stage and saw the Gospel lived out by Christ-followers from our church & other churches. Not to mention the fact that every family receieved an easy-to-read explanation of the Gospel in their Trunk-or-Treat bag.

2. I saw what our church can do when we are motivated and confident in God's leadership and direction. This was a monstrosity of an event. It was bigger than anything we've done in recent memory. It would have been very easy to pass up. It would have been comfortable to do what we've always done. But God called us to greater things, and HE ALWAYS PROVIDES when we are obedient.

3. Did you see HOW MANY VOLUNTEERS THERE WERE UNDER THE TENT AT 5:45?!?!?! It was a holy army of the saints of God ready to march for the Kingdom! It was bigger than our church name or church affiliation. It was a group of men and women, youth and children, old and young, pretty and ugly (HA!) coming together to live out our calling to influence those far from God towards God.

4. The compliments I received from our city officials, leaders, and event participants were astonishing. It was an event that not only surpassed our expectations, but all those involved. But lest we be prideful, remember that Sunday was nothing of our own doing, but God being gracious enough to include us in His work.

5. While we can appreciate Sunday night, we cannot rest. We must determine not to slow down. We must determine to look for the next opportunity to make Christ famous in our community. We must continue building bridges with the lost. It is our great calling as a church.
