On Tuesday, I had the chance to sit in on a town hall meeting with Congressman Allen Boyd of Florida concerning the government's move on health care reform. Let me clear. I have an opinion on the issue, but no one will know that position besides Sara Beth. Political opinions do more to divide people than anything else, so for the sake of unity, I don't want people forming an opinion of me, for good or bad, based on a political opinion. I'd much rather be judged on how I love, serve, and care for people. Therefore, my attendance to the town hall meeting was for the simple reason that people were there. I'm into people. I want to meet them. I want to get to know new people. And I want to build relationships with people so that I may share the love and message of the Gospel. And in Quincy, Florida, there was no better place to meet people than at the town hall meeting. So I went. I observed, and I took notice. Here's what stuck out to me.
People were very passionate about the topic of health care reform. Very passionate.
No matter their opinion, support or opposition, people had and voiced a very strong opinion. In all honesty, I loved the passion, the energy, the willingness to speak up. It was refreshing in the apathetic climate that our culture is so used to. My problem is that I rarely see that kind of passion, energy, and willingness to speak up about Christ. Here's where we put that passion...
1. Sports. 100,000 people cheering on 18-22 year olds like it's life or death. And on top of that we'll spend three hours before the game hanging out getting ready to go in the stadium. When's the last time we celebrated a baptism like that?
2. TV. I know people block off certain nights of the week in order not to miss an episode of their favorite show. When's the last time you gave up just one night to have a lost coworker over to dinner?
3. Music. In a few weeks, thousands we'll hit the civic center to sing songs with Kenny Chesney about beer and summertime. When's the last time you didn't complain that we sang too much at church?
4. Vacation. We book our calendars months in advance and put extra money in savings for a week at the beach. When's the last time you planned a trip to serve the helpless and saved money to help someone in need?
God loved you so much that while you were an utterly helpless, rebelious, sinning enemy of God he sent Jesus Christ to die for you (Romans 5). And because of Christ (and only because of Christ), you have the opportunity to be in a RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD!!!! You are forgiven of your rebellion and sin. You are promised his presence inside of you while you live on earth. You are promised a never-ending life with him when you die. And you have the privilege to serve him right now.
So I ask, what fires you up?
