Luke 5:19--but they couldn't reach him (Jesus) because of the crowd. So they went up to the roof and took off some tiles. They lowered the sick man down on his mat right in front of Jesus.
Four guys so desperate to get their friend to Jesus that they literally tore the roof off of a house. Undeterred by an overcrowded house, unafraid of the religious leaders who would no doubt be offended by their interruption, unrelenting in that they would rather cause a ruckus then risk their friend missing Jesus; these guys knew what Jesus could do for their friend. They knew what the Son of God offered their friend. They knew that there were no other options. They acted with urgency.
82% of people polled said they would attend church if they were simply invited. We don't have to tear a roof off, and we sure don't have to fight overcrowding. But week after week, Sunday after Sunday, we claim that Jesus shows up at our service. Yet with no urgency whatsoever, we abandon our friends to lie on their mat paralyzed in sin, while we go sit and listen to the Master. Here's the reality: Those four guys truly believed Jesus could do something for their friend. Those four guys truly believed that if their friend could just get to Jesus then something would happen in his life. Those four guys truly believed Jesus. Their actions show it. I guess that means our actions show just what we believe about Jesus too.
