a great Sunday...

There are just some Sundays where everything seems to click, and you feel the connection with God at church. While I claim the promise that God is there whether you "feel" Him or not, sometimes it's nice to walk out of a worship experience and know that you've had an encounter with Him. And the incredible thing about yesterday was that Pastor Gus didn't even preach. For some, no preaching in a church service in unfathomable, but yesterday morning God was speaking loud and clear through the music and forcing a sermon would have distracted us from hearing from Him. Yesterday morning I was given a clear reminder of why I answered God's call to serve Him with my life: People Need the Lord.

If you were active in church during the late eighties and early nineties, you know exactly what song I'm talking about. While it seems every other "special music" was this song or "Friends are Friends Forever" during the 80's and 90's, it's been years since I've heard "People Need the Lord" sung in church. And while at first my progressive side said, "Has anyone listened to any Christian music since 1984?" within just a few seconds, God told me to shut up and listen. And so I did. And after the three and a half minutes was up, I was near tears thinking that this is why I'm here. This is why I'm in ministry. This is why I'm in Quincy. This is why I am unsatisfied in any other pursuit in life. And as I sat there thinking about it all, I heard the word "people" over and over in my mind. PEOPLE need the Lord! No matter the color, the section of town they live in, the country they live in, the amount of money in their bank account. "They" are "people" and they NEED Christ.

The last line of the chorus echoes in my head, "When will we realize that people need the Lord." I don't think we get it though. Because if we did realize it, we would actually do something about it. We may agree with the statement. We might say "amen" after it. We may support others who get it. But if each one of us really got it, then we might actually see God doing some incredible things in the people around us.
