wow are we oblivious...

Last night I stayed up way past my bedtime to watch Primetime on ABC. Primetime is an investigative reporting show that usually exposes some kind of injustice going on in our world. Last night's episode was particularly interesting and disturbing at the same time.

During the episode last night, the reporter wanted to see how fast he could buy an 11 year old girl in Hatai. That's right...I said buy. In Haiti, modern day slavery is at it's pinnacle. Having the right amount of money and finding the right people will land you your very own human being for whatever purpose you might desire. Girls and boys are sold daily for sex, physical labor and all sort of other things. The reporter planned to be in Haiti for a week, but to his suprise he had reached an agreement to buy an 11 year old girl in less than 10 hours. If that's not incredible enough, he paid a whopping $300 for her!

I'm sure most of you have seen things that go on in the rest of the world like this, and I would have to say most of you are probably like me and numb to it all. Maybe we're numb because we're overexposed to it through the instant information age that we live in, but I think if we're honest we're numb because we're too busy worrying about ourselves. Our view of the world is limited to the meeting tomorrow, the ballgame this weekend, what's for dinner, the project at the house we've been putting off, and anything else that fits into our tightly wound, scheduled life. What if we cared as much about Haiti and Haitian people as we did American and our American friends? I'm not opposed to supporting American, and in fact I do very much, but I also want us to remember that God who created and blessed our great nation is the Father and Creator of "every tribe, tounge, and nation." His glory is to be revealed to the residents of suburbia as much as the tribe in the darkest jungles of South America. Open the lid of the American box, and allow God to be the God of all nations. In fact, I can't wait for the day to join the millions of brothers and sisters from Asia, Africa, Austrailia, and every other corner of the earth before the throne. And it's our job to bring as many of these brothers and sisters to the throne with us as possible.

With that in mind, who's ready to take His name and glory to "ALL OF THE EARTH"? The plans are being made right now for the possibility for First Baptist Quincy to have an eternal impact on the international community in 2009. Guatemala's doors are beginning to open and I hope a few of you are ready to walk through them with me. Begin praying now, and if God leads, call, email, or see me about joining the journey to make His name great amoung all the nations.

It is tough to hear, see, and read these types of stories, and unfortunately they seem all to common. Yet, with great tragedy comes the opportunity for great triumph. We have the ability to do incredible things if we are willing to sacrifice our own agenda. The issue as I see it is too many people just letting stories like these roll right off of their shoulder without even considering what we could do about it. Thanks for the comment. MP.
