graduation day is coming...

High school graduation always leaves me feeling bi-polar. Here's what I mean:

1. I'm happy to see them finish such a major accomplishment in life--Statistics tell us that many students don't finish high school, and I believe finishing high school is life's first major social, economic, and personal obstacle to overcome.

2. I'm sad because many of them will be moving on--When you spend your time praying for, leading, hanging with, and investing your time in the life of students, you inevitably lose a connection with them when they move on from high school.

3. I'm happy because life's first big adventure is coming their way--Finally moving out from the umbrella of you parents is a major step for many students. Life becomes an incredible adventure as you experience new freedom. You learn to think and choose on your own. You finally get to explore your passion and purpose without limitations.

4. I'm sad because many students walk out of the church never to come back after they graduate--The statistics on the forefront of every student pastor's mind are the one's that show the disconnect that happens between the church and college students. Statistics show that anywhere from 60-84% of students involved in youth group during their teenage years are no longer in church following their freshman year of college. It is the dark spot of student ministry.

So I'll fight my bi-polar state over the next few days, but I cannot ignore that ginormous statistic. Why the disconnect and what can we do? Let's talk about this week.
