when opportunity knocks, get out of bed and answer the door...

Tickets to a ball game; a day at a friend's beach house; an offer for a free dinner. Opportunities like this may not come very often, but I bet when they do come it's pretty easy for us to say "yes." It's easy for us to alter our routine, put something off, or try something new when we're invited to do something that brings personal enjoyment and satisfaction. When opportunities like these come along, we don't just mosey up to the door and open it. We get that door open and walk through it as fast as we can.

But what about an opportunities like these? Teaching English to Chinese children or plugging into your community by serving them at a city-wide festival. These opportunities come along and we tend to pull the covers over our head, roll over, and let the doorbell keep ringing until it eventually stops. Why? Because opportunities like these don't guarantee personal satisfaction or enjoyment. They aren't always easy and they aren't always free. They don't provide instant gratification. They ask us to put another ahead of ourself. They ask us to put our faith into action. They seperate those who want to soak up religion from those who want to serve Christ.

Are these examples pulled from thin air? No. They are opportunities that have been presented to the people at First Baptist Church Quincy in recent days. There is an opportunity for you to serve by teaching English to Chinese children right here in Quincy. There is an opportunity for you to impact our community by serving at an upcoming city festival. These are real opportunities that are knocking on the doors of our church. To my family at First Quincy, opportunity is at our doors and it's knocking...no, it's banging. The question I have for us is are we going to jump out of bed, run to the door, and yank it open? Or are we going to pull the covers over our head, roll over and wait for the opportunities to stop knocking?

Ephesians 2:10--For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so we can do good things he planned for us long ago.

Mike--you are so "DEAD ON!" I want to know more about the festival that you are referring to. I am signed up for the Chinese children but didn't know about the other one. Thanks! Celeste
